Social evening – King Harry Pub St Albans followed by Charity Night performance of DADS ARMY AT THE ABBEY THEATRE

*Le Petit Bac is a popular French game (known here as Scattergories) where you need to think fast & smart to come up with unique words in different categories. The game will be played in English, but a basic knowledge of French will be a bonus.

The Friends of Nevers is pleased to support this event to help raise money for two local charities. St Francis Hospice and Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline.

We will meet at King Harry Pub from 5.30 (for a drink and food if people want to). If you would be happy to car share or would like to go but need a lift please include this in your email to friendsofnevers@gmail.com. You can book tickets by clicking on the links.

Company of 10 performace of Dads Army based on the popular sitcom. At Abbey theatre 7.30 for 8pm. Book Rows E & G with your chosen charity to sit with other members of the friends of Nevers.

Visit to St Albans from our friends in Nevers

We welcomed our Friends from Nevers to St Albans on Thursday 4th June. 18 people arrived at St Albans city station and were met by their hosts. Having had a relaxing evening with their hosts, on Friday morning people went into London. Some people went to China town for lunch, others went to visit the Jewel Tower before meeting at the Houses of Parliament at 3pm. Following a tour round the Houses of Parliament, many then had a meal in London before returning home.

On Saturday we took our french visitors to Cambridge, whilst the weather was mainly dry for our walking tour, it did rain when we were on the punts. Fortunatley it did not spoil the day, and we could dry out before our excellent evening meal at Christs college Cambridge.

After a day with their hosts when some people saw some of the folk festival in St Albans and others visited St Pauls Walden. We met at The Hollybush pub for a meal, and some music and singing provided by Madame Fifi.

AGM & Spring Social event

On the 21 March at 7pm we held our our AGM at St Mary’s Hall in Marshalswick. The current committee were reelected, with the addition of Stephen Bown. We discussed the forth coming visit by the French and possible activities. A number of people ask questions about the itinery. We also showed a short video that had been created by Leslie Mccann for publicity purposes.

At 7.45 we had a delicious supper comprised of dishes brought by the attendees. This was followed by our Musical Entante which included some live music (Piano and violin) enjoyed by all. During the musical questions we were also treated to excerpts of music of all types for people to identify. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.

What a Success!

Our Whist and French supper evening proved a great success. We were served a choice of homemade french courgette soup or butternut squash soup with fresh baguettes, cheese and pate.

This was followed by a game of Military whist, where after each game players moved round allowing for conversation in between each game.

The games where quick to play and players lost their countries flag if the lost. One couple where the out right winners, having gained the most amount of flags.

There were substantial raffle prizes including a bottle of whisky. Altogether the evening raised £450 towards our expenses when Les Amicale visit next year.

Farewell Andrea

On Friday the 7th of March we held our AGM. Sadly Andrea resigned as chairperson. A significant event as she had been the first chairperson when the Friends of nevers had started official exchanges with people in Nevers in 1984. After a break she returned as chairperson in 2019. Since Covid, Andrea has helped us organise a Murder Mystery in a French Chateau. Our Jazz Cafe soiree, including a little skit with Rene. The fifthieth Anniversary which included a barn dance enjoyed by all and a visit to Oxford. Andrea told us about some of the highlights of her membership, and was given a small gift as a token of the Societies appreciation. After the AGM some of our members paid tribute to Andrea in a song. After the AGM we had a bring and share supper and a quiz.

Jazz Soiree Social evening

Our Jazz Soiree on Friday 22nd November went with a swing thanks to the BSV Jazz Band. The french cafe feel was enhanced by the decorations and prescence of some charactures from the 1980’s sit com ‘Allo ‘Allo. Guests enjoyed a supper of a mixture of french cheeses and characuterie, accompanied by french bread and some salad. The Jazz band helped to provide a convival atmosphere and included some french classics such as Je ne regrette rien in their repetoire. The consumption of wine from the bar may have helped encourage some members to dance.A good time was had by all, as you can see below.
