History of the Friends of Nevers

St Albans was twinned with Nevers in 1974.  There were official visits to each town by the mayors and a signing of the twinning agreement. Until 1984 most of the visits where by town officials.

In 1981 the council felt it would be beneficial for a separate organisation to be set up and held a meeting of local people.  The meeting was well attended and members of a wide range of organisations were there including schools, sports clubs, local groups for the elderly.  The friendship group was set up in 1984.

For the tenth anniversary in 1984, fifty people from St. Albans visited Nevers and stayed with families in the town.  This marked a change in the tone of the visits, and since then many people from St Albans have enjoyed the hospitality of the people of Nevers.  The biennial visits normally take place in May or June.

During the visit to Nevers the french take us to places of local or historic interest, and there is a group meal.  On the other days there is time to get to know our hosts and visit additional places of interest.
